The effect of Bell Siphon grow bed volume on flood and drain durations

Abstract

This research aims to 1) design and assemble a bell siphon, 2) test the performance of the designed bell siphon, and 3) determine the durations of water flood and drain for different volumes of grow bed. Using a descriptive method, each component of the bell siphon is explained structurally and functionally. The discharge of the bell siphon for each treament was measured using a volumetric method. To determine the durations of water flood and drain for each treatment, a multiple linear regression approach was used. The device structurally and functionally has three main components, namely a grow bed for planting, a nutrient tank as a nutrient reservoir, and a standpipe for determining the maximum and minimum levels of water. The regression equations obtained from testing the volume of the grow bed are Y=0.25x+21.46 with R2=0.914 for the flood duration and Y=0.040x - 4.313 with R2=0.926 for the drain duration. From this research it can be concluded that the designed bell siphon performed well in discharging water to the grow bed and that there was no significant difference between treatments. The effect of the volume of the grow bed on the flood and drain durations was positive. © 2025 Author(s).
