Bacterial cellulose (BC) has gained significant attention as a base material for wound dressings due to its superior physical properties, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. However, to produce wound dressings that actively facilitate wound healing, BC modification is essential. To provide a comprehensive analysis of the potential research developments and the trends in bacterial cellulose-based wound dressings (BCWD), this review focuses on the BCWD research conducted in the last decade. The review highlights the optimization of BC usage as a base material for active wound dressing, including the incorporation of miscellaneous materials and the enhancement of BC properties such as ultra-transparency, anti-leakage, stretchability/flexibility, adhesiveness, conductivity, injectability, pattern, and pH-sensor ability. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
