Asphalt Mixture Stability Improvement Using Aren Fruit Waste Ash as Additional Filler

Abstract

Arenga pinnata is a species of palm in Plantae kingdom which produces consumable fruit. The fruit are popularly called Kolang-Kaling or Aren fruit by Indonesian local citizens for its freshness. Aren fruit is usually processed by home industries before it is distributed to both local and modern market. The industry of this specific fruit becomes massive by the increasing demand of this local fruit; thus, the waste from its shell is inevitable. This specific shell from Aren fruit can be transformed into ash by burning process and can be similar to filler in asphalt concrete. This study aims to explore Marshall characteristics on asphalt concrete using this specific ash as filler substitution. The composition of the ash on the asphalt concrete is 25, 50, 75, and 100% of total filler needed in wearing-course aggregate grading. Furthermore, each variation of filler substitution is analyzed and compared to asphalt mixture of wearing-course aggregate grading using Portland cement as its filler and Indonesia Road Specification (Spesifikasi Umum Bina Marga 2018). The result shows that optimum stability of the mixture is 1107.7 kg with 5.64% bitumen and 50% Aren fruit waste ash as filler. The specific mixture stability is 10.2% higher than normal asphalt mixture using Portland cement as filler. Furthermore, flow and void in mineral aggregate percentage are fulfil the requirement of Indonesia Road Specification. However, according to void filled with bitumen and void in mix, the mixture is unqualified, because the specific properties are under and beyond the specification, respectively. Finally, the utilization of Aren fruit waste as filler on asphalt mixture strongly can be considered for waste utilization and road pavement innovation. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
