Abstract

Since 2018, the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry has granted a social forestry decree to the 28-hectare area in Bagian Kesatuan Pemangkuan Hutan (BKPH) Ciparay. Establishment of a sustainable social forestry area that manages natural (biophysical) resources to form good institutions is necessary. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the biophysical aspects of the social forestry area, encompassing edaphic factors, vegetation diversity as a component of biodiversity, and land cover with a particular emphasis on vegetation cover density. The area was divided into five blocks for more efficient research based on floristic conditions and land use. An analysis of edaphic factors, including soil chemical and physical properties, as well as soil macrofauna was carried out to analyze soil fertility. Additionally, vegetation analysis and field verification, based on Rupabumi Indonesia (RBI) map data and Sentinel 2A satellite imagery, were employed to examine the area's vegetation structure and composition. The soil-bearing capacity in the area is considered quite good, with a bulk density of 0.90 g/cm3 and a soil pH range of 4.8 to 6.7. The type of soil is Andosol soil, which is known for its fertile characteristics supporting plant growth. The level of soil macrofauna diversity is at a moderate level, and the land is covered by dense vegetation with an NDVI > 0.4. These positive assessments of soil quality, biodiversity, and dense vegetation cover have significant implications for the continued development and success of social forestry initiatives in the area. © 2024 Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia.
