Abstract

This study explores the development and application of alginate-cellulose-LDH-CNT hydrogel composites for efficient water removal in biofuel purification, addressing critical industry needs for effective, eco-friendly absorbents. Combining naturally derived biopolymers (alginate and cellulose) with layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), these composites exhibit superior water absorption, retention, flame resistance, and mechanical strength. Alginate and cellulose contribute biodegradability and hydrophilicity, while LDHs enhance stability and selective water retention through layered structures, and CNTs improve structural resilience. Compared to conventional absorbents, the hydrogel composites demonstrate high selectivity, economic efficiency, and reduced environmental impact. This composite's cost-effective production and renewable material base highlight its potential for scalable industrial application, advancing sustainable practices in biofuel purification. Future research on optimizing crosslinking and production techniques could further enhance these hydrogels, broadening their applications in biofuel and beyond. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
