Abstract

Rare earth-based metal alloys are suitable to be used as the negative electrode of NiMH batteries due to their hydrogen storage capability. Alloy with a composition of La1.5Mg0.5Ni5.2Co1.8 has been shown to have excellent electrochemical properties. However, due to the magnesium content which has a low melting point, typical high-temperature processes to synthesize metal alloys may not be suitable. This work studies the synthesis of magnesium-containing metal alloys by using sol–gel autocombustion method which does not require high temperature. The detailed method of fabrication is presented here. A TGA-DTA-QMS characterization shows that the autocombustion reaction occurs at 250 °C, thus the heating of the dry gel is determined to be at 300 °C for 30 min. The structural characterization by XRD confirms the formation of the metal alloy with no indication of the presence of oxides. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
