Comprehensive Analysis of the Quality Dimensions of MOOC Software: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

As the use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) continues to grow as a scalable digital learning solution, there is an increasing demand for assessing the software engineering performance of these platforms from a software engineering perspective. The study aims to analyze the quality dimensions of MOOC platforms, focusing on key software aspects such as user-friendliness, functionality, performance, integration, security, and technical support. Methodology: In accordance with the PRISMA-S protocol, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted on 34 peer-reviewed English-language articles published between 2017 and 2024. Information was collected from trusted academic databases, including Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, and Dimensions. The SPICE framework (setting, perspective, intervention, comparison, evaluation) has been used to structure the research focus, highlighting the impact of the software dimension on the user experience and the Platform's performance. The results show that usability is the most important factor influencing user satisfaction, followed by functionality and system performance. In addition, data security and privacy issues have been identified as critical challenges that are not being sufficiently addressed. The findings highlight the need to develop a comprehensive evaluation framework that systematically integrates software quality dimensions into MOOC assessment models. The study offers practical recommendations for MOOC developers and educators to improve the quality of their software and the reliability of their systems. In addition, develop new solutions informed by the findings and shortcomings of previous studies and new research directions, using a more comprehensive MOOC Quality Assessment Approach or Framework. © 2026, Politeknik Negeri Padang.
