Electronic waste, especially spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), has become a significant source of waste due to their widespread use. The disposal of these batteries raises environmental concerns, particularly with regard to the recovery of important mineral such as manganese. Manganese is a critical mineral used in steel production, batteries and other industrial applications. The global manganese supply is highly dependent on a few countries, raising concerns regarding resource depletion and environmental impacts. Bioleaching, a microbial process, has been identified as a promising approach for manganese extraction from low-grade ores. In this study, bacterial isolates were obtained from a gold mining area in Tanggamus, Lampung and utilized in manganese bioleaching from spent LIBs. The bioleaching methods applied were two-step and spent-medium in 9K bacterial growth media with 1 gram/100 mL (1% w/v) pulp density for 7 days of incubation. The bioleaching process was monitored by measuring pH and manganese concentration. ICP-OES analysis was used to determine the solubilized manganese in the leaching medium. Selected bacterial isolate showing the most significant pH reduction was used in the leaching process. Manganese recovered from this study was 5,49%, 18,28%, and 26,90% for control, two-step, and spent-medium, respectively. These result indicate that species isolated from the Tanggamus gold mining area have the potential to recover manganese frim spent LIBs and can be a feasible alternative for metal extraction from electronic waste. © 2025 Author(s).
