Abstract

The effect of obstacle on water flow is vital in many studies related to hydraulics. In one case the obstacle is often expected to reduce the velocity and height of the water behind the obstacle as much as possible, while in another case the obstacle is expected to have the least impact on the behavior of the water behind it. This research was conducted by applying a 2-dimensional shallow water equation with a finite difference approach to the Lax scheme, a modified approach of Forward Time Central Space scheme, and a Hansen numerical filter to improve the stability of the model. 6 combinations consisting of 2 pillar formations each (straight and zigzag) and 3 pillar shapes (square, semicircular and triangular) that have the same width are used to find out their impact on changes in velocity and water level downstream of the pillar. The results obtained in the end are recommendations for the shape and formation of obstacle that are suitable for use in commonly expected conditions. It is found that the combination zigzag configuration triangle-shaped pillars effect the water properties the most while the combination of straight configuration semicircle-shaped pillars effect the water properties the least. © 2025 Author(s).
