The research aims to evaluate the quantitative hot cracking criteria. The quantitative criteria, i.e. the SKK (Suyitno–Kool–Katgerman) and the modified SKK criteria were implemented with various parameters such as the cooling rate, strain rate, grain diameter, packing parameter, Mg content in Al9ZnxMg2Cu, and Cu content in Al9Zn2MgxCu. The validation of the result is also conducted by comparing the implementation result with the experimental data. The results show that the hot cracking initiation based on the SKK criterion occurs at lower stress and higher solid fraction than that based on the modified SKK criterion. This means that hot cracking initiation based on the SKK criteria occurs earlier than that based on the modified SKK criteria. Based on the modified SKK criterion, the critical stress initially decreases sharply and then increases gradually with solid fraction, whereas the critical stress remains decreased based on the SKK criterion. © 2022 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
