The radiation characteristics improvement of mi-crostrip antenna affected by a defected ground structure (DGS) loaded magnetic material is presented. The antenna which is designed by microstrip technology aims to work at the center frequency of 4 GHz, whereas the magnetic material loaded into the DGS is polycrystalline Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG). The radiation characteristics of the antenna are investigated under the incorporation of DGS-loaded magnetic material without an external magnetic bias. The investigation results are then compared with radiation characteristics of the conventional microstrip antenna. It was found that the inclusion of magnetic material could widen the axial ratio bandwidth around the center frequency up to 90% improving the circular polarization characteristic, while it maintains the working frequency and the radiation pattern. © 2022 IEEE.
